Patrick Swayze was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in January 2008. His doctors said he responded well to surgery, radiotherapy and experimental drugs - but pancreatic cancer is a notorious killer: average life expectation after diagnosis is around six months, with only 5% of patients surviving to five years.
